A 'CRASH' OF RHINOS! The Wildest Name for a Group of Animals!

The animal kingdom is full of surprisingly imaginative names for groups of creatures, and among the most striking is the term for a gathering of rhinoceroses. These magnificent, powerful mammals are collectively known as a "crash." This vivid moniker is believed to stem from a particular characteristic of rhinos: their notoriously poor eyesight. Despite their immense size and ability to run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, a rhino can only clearly see about 30 feet in front of itself. The theory suggests that when several of these colossal animals move together with confidence and speed, their limited vision could lead to an accidental "crash" into obstacles or even each other.

The tradition of assigning unique and often poetic names to groups of animals, known as "terms of venery," dates back to the Late Middle Ages in England. These groups offer protection and opportunities for young rhinos to learn. Beyond "crash," other less common collective nouns for rhinos include a "herd" or a "stubbornness," perhaps reflecting their resolute nature.
