Bees Can Detect Explosives
The remarkable olfactory sense of the honeybee, typically used to find nectar-rich flowers from miles away, has been harnessed for an astonishing purpose: locating dangerous explosives. The training process is a classic example of Pavlovian conditioning. Researchers present bees with a sugar-water reward that has been mixed with the specific scent molecules of a target substance, such as TNT. The bees quickly learn to associate that particular smell with a meal. After this brief conditioning, the bees will instinctively extend their proboscis (their tongue (Review)-like feeding tube) whenever they detect the target scent, anticipating a sugary treat.
This simple, reflexive action is the key to their use in detection. In the field, trained bees can be housed in portable detectors that monitor their movements. As air from the surrounding environment is passed over them, a camera or sensor system can identify when a large number of bees simultaneously extend their proboscis, signaling the presence of the target explosive. This method is not only highly sensitive but also significantly faster and cheaper than training a sniffer dog. Research into this capability, partly funded by military agencies like DARPA, has explored using bees to screen for everything from landmines in post-conflict zones to contraband in security checkpoints, showcasing a surprising intersection of nature and technology.
