Mind-Blowing Human Body Fact! Astronauts Can Grow TALLER in Space!

Stepping into the microgravity environment of space brings about a fascinating, albeit temporary, alteration to the human body: a noticeable increase in height. On Earth, the constant downward pull of gravity compresses our spines, keeping the vertebrae tightly packed. However, once freed from this persistent force, the spine undergoes a remarkable transformation.

The scientific explanation lies within the intervertebral discs, the jelly-like cushions nestled between each vertebra. On Earth, these discs are under constant pressure, but in microgravity, they are no longer subjected to the same compression. As a result, they can decompress and rehydrate, effectively expanding in size. This expansion, combined with the natural straightening of the spinal column without gravity's pull, allows the spine to lengthen. Astronauts typically experience an increase of up to 3% of their original height, which for many, can translate to an extra inch or two.

This newfound height is not permanent, however. Upon returning to Earth, the familiar force of gravity quickly begins to reassert its influence. Within a few days or weeks, the intervertebral discs gradually recompress, and the spine returns to its pre-flight length, bringing the astronaut (Review) back to their original height. While a temporary height boost might sound appealing, this rapid readjustment can sometimes lead to discomfort, with many astronauts reporting back pain as their bodies readapt to terrestrial gravity.
