This allows them to conserve precious energy, a crucial survival strategy given their limited access to readily available calories. Every aspect of their biology, from their slow movements to their internal processing, is geared towards maximizing energy efficiency. Their stomachs can be so full that their contents account for up to 37% of their body mass, limiting how much more they can eat until digestion progresses. This ancient adaptation ensures they can thrive on a diet that would leave most other mammals starving, making their digestive pace a key to their evolutionary success.
