Palau's Jellyfish Lake, locally known as Ongeim'l Tketau, is a remarkable marine lake on Eil Malk island, a part of the Rock Islands. This unique body of water, formed approximately 12,000 years ago, became isolated from the open ocean due to geological shifts and rising sea levels that trapped seawater in depressions within the limestone islands. Over millennia, this isolation fostered a distinct ecosystem, leading to fascinating evolutionary adaptations in its inhabitants.

The golden jellyfish (Mastigias papua etpisoni) in Jellyfish Lake have developed a unique symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae, called zooxanthellae, that live within their tissues. These algae provide the jellyfish with nutrients produced through photosynthesis, in exchange for protection and exposure to sunlight. This reliance on the sun's energy drives the jellyfish's daily migration across the lake, following the path of the sun to maximize light exposure for their algal partners.

While these jellyfish do possess stinging cells, inherited from their oceanic ancestors, the sting is exceptionally mild and generally imperceptible to humans. This reduction in stinging capability is attributed to the lake's isolation and the absence of most natural predators, which diminished the evolutionary pressure to maintain a potent sting. The lake itself is meromictic, meaning it has distinct layers of water that do not mix; an oxygen-rich upper layer where the jellyfish thrive, and a deeper, anoxic layer saturated with hydrogen sulfide gas, which is toxic (Review) to most life forms. This stratification further contributes to the lake's unique and delicate environment.
