This Jellyfish Can CHEAT Death and Live FOREVER!

The *Turritopsis dohrnii*, often referred to as the "immortal jellyfish," boasts a unique biological capability that sets it apart in the animal kingdom. This tiny marine creature, typically no larger than a pinky fingernail, possesses the extraordinary ability to revert its adult form back to an immature polyp stage when faced with environmental stress, physical damage, or old age. This process essentially allows it to reset its biological clock, bypassing the typical progression towards death and effectively restarting its life cycle.

The remarkable mechanism behind this phenomenon is called transdifferentiation, a rare cellular process where specialized adult cells can transform into entirely different types of specialized cells. Instead of dying, the jellyfish can absorb its tentacles and sink to the ocean floor, forming a cyst-like ball that reorganizes into a new polyp colony within a day or two. From this rejuvenated polyp stage, new, genetically identical jellyfish medusae can then bud off. While *Turritopsis dohrnii* was first discovered in the Mediterranean Sea in 1883 (Review), its incredible ability to reverse aging was not observed until the 1990s, when scientists documented this looped life cycle.

This unique biological feat offers significant interest for scientific research, particularly in the fields of stem cell biology and the study of aging. While theoretically capable of an indefinite life, individual *Turritopsis dohrnii* are not truly invincible (Review); they can still succumb to predators or disease, especially before they reach sexual maturity. Nevertheless, the immortal jellyfish challenges our fundamental understanding of life and mortality, providing valuable insights that could inform future studies on regeneration and human longevity.
