Many animals, particularly those that are often prey, possess a remarkable optical adaptation: horizontal, rectangular pupils. This distinctive shape is not merely a quirk of nature, but a highly evolved feature crucial for survival in their environments. Goats, sheep, deer, and even some toads and octopi share this fascinating eye design. Its primary function is to grant these herbivores an exceptionally wide field of vision, allowing them to scan their surroundings for approaching threats across open landscapes.
The evolutionary advantage of these horizontal pupils lies in maximizing peripheral vision. When grazing with their heads down, goats can rotate their eyes up to 50 degrees or more within their sockets, a phenomenon known as cycloconvergence, to keep their pupils aligned with the horizon. This ensures a continuous, broad view of the ground and sides, making it incredibly difficult for predators to approach undetected. This panoramic perspective, often reaching an impressive 320 to 340 degrees, is a vital defense mechanism, enabling them to spot danger from nearly all directions without having to move their heads.

In contrast, ambush predators, such as cats, often have vertical slit pupils, which excel at judging distance for a precise pounce on their prey.
