It means our planet bulges slightly at the equator and is consequently flattened at the poles. Influential scientists like Isaac Newton theorized that a rotating body, subject to self-gravity, would naturally assume an oblate spheroid form. This concept was later confirmed through scientific expeditions, notably those dispatched by the French Academy of Sciences in the 1730s to Peru (modern-day Ecuador) and Lapland. Their meticulous measurements provided empirical evidence, definitively settling the debate and validating Newton's predictions about our planet's fascinating, non-spherical figure.
