A Group of Flamingos Is a Flamboyance

It’s hard to imagine a more fitting term for a gathering of these iconic birds. The name ‘flamboyance’ perfectly captures the dazzling spectacle of their collective presence, from their brilliant plumage to their synchronized, almost theatrical, social behaviors. While they can also be referred to as a ‘stand’ or a ‘colony,’ the term flamboyance uniquely highlights the showy and vibrant nature that has made them so famous. This descriptive naming tradition is common in English, giving us other memorable group names like a 'murder' of crows or a 'parliament' of owls.

Interestingly, this famous pink color is not something flamingos are born with. Chicks hatch with dull grey or white feathers, and their iconic rosy hue is acquired entirely through their diet. They feast on brine shrimp and blue-green algae, which are rich in natural pigments called carotenoids—the same compounds that give carrots their orange color. The flamingo's body metabolizes these pigments, depositing them into their feathers, legs, and beak. A brighter pink flamingo is often a healthier, more well-fed bird, making its vibrant color a sign of good fitness to potential mates.
