DAZZLING ANCIENT WONDER! The Great Pyramid Once Gleamed White!

Imagine the Giza plateau not with the familiar sandy-hued pyramids, but with a monumental structure that shimmered brilliantly under the ancient Egyptian sun. The Great (Review) Pyramid, built for King Khufu, was originally cloaked in an outer layer of fine, white Tura limestone. These exquisite casing stones, quarried from across the Nile, were meticulously cut and then polished to an extraordinary sheen, creating a smooth, reflective surface that would have truly dazzled onlookers. This gleaming exterior was so striking that some believe the pyramid was known to the ancient Egyptians as "Ikhet," meaning "Glorious light."

The craftsmanship involved in shaping and setting these stones was remarkable. Egyptologist Flinders Petrie even compared their precision to "opticians' work," despite the colossal scale. This highly polished surface wasn't just for aesthetics; it transformed the pyramid into a colossal mirror, capable of reflecting sunlight over vast distances. Some theories suggest these specular reflections could have been intentionally directed towards other significant ancient sites during specific times of the year, perhaps as part of religious or astronomical observations.

Over millennia, however, the Great Pyramid underwent a dramatic transformation. A powerful earthquake in 1303 AD is believed to have dislodged many of these precious casing stones. Subsequently, much of this valuable white limestone was systematically removed and repurposed for other construction projects, most notably in the building of mosques and fortresses in nearby Cairo during the 14th and 19th centuries. While a few remnants of the original casing can still be observed at the pyramid's base, and a single stone is displayed in Scotland, the exposed underlying core is what visitors see today, a stark contrast (Review) to its once radiant glory.
