For an animal that must consciously surface to breathe, falling into a deep, unconscious sleep would be a death sentence. To solve this problem, dolphins and other cetaceans evolved a remarkable strategy known as unihemispheric slow-wave sleep. This allows one half of their brain to enter a state of deep rest while the other half remains fully alert and functional. This waking hemisphere is responsible for directing the dolphin to the surface for air and keeping an eye out for predators like sharks.

This unique form of rest is physically observable. The eye connected to the sleeping hemisphere will be closed, while the eye corresponding to the awake hemisphere remains open and actively scans the environment. Dolphins typically maintain this state for about two hours before switching, allowing the other half of their brain to rest. Over the course of a day, both hemispheres get the restorative sleep they need, but the animal is never completely vulnerable or unaware of its need to breathe.

This fascinating adaptation is not exclusive to dolphins. Many birds utilize unihemispheric sleep to rest during long migratory flights, and other marine mammals like fur seals use it to stay vigilant while dozing in the water (Review).
