The Oldest Known Wooden Structure Is 476,000 Years Old

Organic materials like wood rarely survive the ravages of time, making archaeological finds of ancient timber exceptionally rare. At Kalambo Falls in Zambia, however, waterlogged, oxygen-poor sediments created a perfect preservative environment. Here, researchers unearthed two large, interlocking logs that were intentionally shaped and notched to fit together. Using advanced luminescence dating on the surrounding sand, scientists determined the structure was assembled an astonishing 476,000 years ago, pushing back the history of carpentry by hundreds of thousands of years.

This discovery dramatically reshapes our understanding of early human relatives. The structure predates the emergence of our own species, *Homo sapiens*, and was likely built by an earlier hominin such as *Homo heidelbergensis*. The find challenges the long-held view that these early humans were purely nomadic. Creating even a simple foundation (Review) or platform suggests a desire to occupy a specific location for an extended period, requiring complex planning and sophisticated woodworking skills. It is the earliest evidence anywhere in the world of hominins deliberately building structures, revealing a level of technical ingenuity and cognitive ability far beyond what was previously thought possible for our deep ancestors.
