There Is a Word for Throwing Windows

Some actions are so specific they demand their own unique word, and "defenestration" is a prime example. Derived from the Latin "de-" (out of) and "fenestra" (window), it literally means the act of throwing something or someone from a window. While it can apply to any object, the term carries a heavy historical weight, as it was coined to describe not just a random act, but a powerful and violent political statement.

The word was born from real-world political violence in Prague. The first major event occurred in 1419, when radical reformers stormed the New Town Hall and threw several Catholic officials from the windows, an act that helped trigger the Hussite Wars. However, the most famous incident happened in 1618, when Protestant officials, furious over the violation of their religious freedoms, threw two Catholic governors and their secretary from a castle window.
