During his intense and remarkably prolific decade-long career, Vincent van Gogh's artistic vision remained largely unappreciated by the art world of his time. Despite creating over 2,000 artworks, including around 900 paintings, his vibrant, expressive style was considered unconventional and struggled to find buyers. He grappled with mental health issues and social isolation, which further hindered his ability to connect with dealers and collectors in the bustling art centers of Europe.

Amidst this lack of commercial success, a single painting, "The Red Vineyard," stands out as the only one definitively sold during his lifetime. Painted in November 1888 in Arles, this evocative landscape depicting workers in a vineyard under a fiery sky was exhibited at the annual show of Les XX in Brussels in 1890. It was purchased for 400 francs by Anna (Review) Boch, a Belgian painter and collector who was also the sister of Eugรจne Boch, a friend of Van Gogh. The modest price and the personal connection of the buyer underscore the profound disconnect between Van Gogh's artistic brilliance and his contemporary market value.

The profound irony of Van Gogh's life is how drastically his reputation transformed after his death. His posthumous fame soared, largely due to the tireless efforts of his sister-in-law, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, who inherited his vast collection of artworks and letters. She organized numerous exhibitions and published his poignant correspondence, which offered deep insights into his creative process and struggles, cementing his image as a tortured genius. Today, Van Gogh is celebrated as one of history's most influential artists, and his paintings, once virtually worthless, now command tens of millions of dollars, a testament to a legacy finally recognized.
