You Are Taller in the Morning

The feeling of shrinking (Review) throughout the day isn't just in your head. The secret lies within your spinal column, which is not a rigid rod but a dynamic stack of vertebrae separated by soft, gel-like cushions called intervertebral discs. These discs act as your body's shock absorbers, and they are composed largely of water. As you stand, walk, and move around, the constant downward pull of gravity, combined with your own body weight, gently squeezes fluid out of these discs, causing them to compress slightly. While the change in each individual disc is minuscule, the cumulative effect across your entire spine can reduce your total height by a centimeter or more.

This process reverses itself when you lie down to sleep. With the vertical pressure of gravity removed, your spinal discs are free to decompress. Like tiny sponges, they slowly reabsorb fluid and expand back to their full, plump size overnight. This nightly rehydration is what restores your "lost" height by the morning. A more extreme version of this phenomenon is observed in astronauts; in the microgravity of space, their spines can decompress so much that they may temporarily gain up to two inches in height, an effect that is quickly reversed upon their return to Earth's gravitational pull.
