Sunlight Takes Eight Minutes to Reach Earth
The universe has a speed limit, and even light must obey it. Because the Sun is about 150 million kilometers away, its light doesn't reach us instantaneously. Instead, we experience a cosmic time lag. This means that every sunrise you witness is actually an image of the Sun as it appeared over eight minutes ago. This principle extends to everything in the cosmos; when we look at the night sky, we are essentially looking into a gallery of the past. The light from Jupiter might be an hour old, while the light from the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, is already more than four years old by the time it reaches our eyes.
This incredible travel time was one of the first cosmic distances to be understood. In the 17th century, the astronomer Ole Rรธmer was the first to provide a quantitative estimate for the speed of light by observing the eclipses of Jupiter's moons. He noticed that the timing of the eclipses seemed to change depending on whether Earth was moving toward or away from Jupiter in its orbit. He correctly deduced this was due to the finite time it took for the light from Jupiter's moons to cross the extra distance and reach him.
The implications are mind-bending. Not only is the light delayed, but so is the Sun's gravity. According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, gravity propagates at the same speed as light. So, if the Sun were to magically disappear, Earth would continue to orbit the empty space where the Sun used to be for a full 8 minutes and 20 seconds before its light winked out and its gravitational tether was finally cut.
