The King of Hearts Is the Only King Without a Mustache

While his royal counterparts in a standard deck all sport prominent mustaches, the King of Hearts is famously clean-shaven. This unique look isn't a deliberate design choice but is widely believed to be the result of a centuries-old printing error. Early playing cards were made using woodblock printing, and as designs were copied and recopied over generations, details were often lost or distorted. The original French design for this king, often identified as the emperor Charlemagne, once featured a mustache. Through countless reproductions, especially as the design was adopted for the English pattern we use today, the facial hair simply vanished from the block.

This same process of simplification is responsible for the king's other famous feature and his grim nickname. The original artwork depicted him holding a battle-axe over his shoulder, a symbol of power. However, centuries of poor reproduction altered the image, causing the axe head to disappear and the handle to shift its angle. The result is the modern illusion of the king driving a sword into his own head, earning him the moniker 'the Suicide King.' This macabre transformation, born from a simple loss of printing detail, has cemented his unique and slightly unsettling place in the deck.
