Many people associate a post-holiday meal nap with the turkey on their plate, often attributing this drowsiness to the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is indeed a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of well-being, and melatonin, a hormone crucial for regulating sleep cycles. It is a necessary amino acid found in many protein-rich foods, and its role in producing these sleep-related chemicals has led to the widespread belief that turkey is uniquely soporific.
However, the idea that turkey contains an exceptionally high amount of tryptophan compared to other protein sources is a common misconception. Scientific analysis reveals that turkey has a similar concentration of tryptophan per ounce as chicken, beef, or even certain types of cheese. Eating turkey by itself does not provide an amount of tryptophan sufficient to induce a noticeable sleepiness beyond what any other protein-rich meal might. Additionally, alcohol consumption, a common feature of celebratory meals, is a known depressant that contributes significantly to feelings of fatigue.
