Houseflies only live for 24 hours

The notion that houseflies exist for only a single day is a widely held belief, but this common misconception is far from accurate. The truth is, adult houseflies typically enjoy a much longer lifespan, ranging from 15 to 30 days, and in some favorable conditions, they can even survive for up to two months. This persistent myth likely arises from a confusion with a different insect altogether: the mayfly.

Houseflies, scientifically known as Musca domestica, undergo a complete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, larval (maggot), pupal, and adult stages. The entire life cycle, from egg to adult, can be completed in as little as seven to ten days in warm environments, but the adult stage itself is designed for more than just a fleeting 24 hours. Their longevity as adults is influenced by factors such as temperature, humidity, and the availability of food.

The origin of the 24-hour lifespan myth can be largely attributed to the mayfly. These fascinating insects are indeed known for their exceptionally short adult lives. After spending up to several years as aquatic nymphs, many mayfly species emerge as winged adults with the primary, and often sole, purpose of reproduction. Their adult stage can last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days, and some species don't even possess functional mouthparts, meaning they cannot feed during their brief aerial existence. It is this extremely ephemeral adult life of the mayfly that has likely been mistakenly applied to the common housefly, leading to the widespread and enduring myth.
