Humans evolved from chimpanzees

The idea that humans evolved directly from chimpanzees is a widespread misunderstanding of how evolution works. This common misconception often arises from a simplified, linear view of evolution, picturing a direct progression where one species transforms into another. When people hear that humans evolved "from apes," they sometimes mistakenly assume this means modern-day chimpanzees, overlooking the crucial concept of a shared ancestor. This misinterpretation can be reinforced by oversimplified diagrams or a lack of understanding of the branching nature of evolutionary trees.

In reality, humans and chimpanzees share a common ancestor that lived millions of years ago, but we evolved along separate evolutionary paths. Scientific evidence, including extensive fossil records and genetic studies, clearly demonstrates this branching pattern. Our DNA is remarkably similar to that of chimpanzees, around 98.8 percent, which is strong evidence of a recent common ancestor, not direct descent. This last common ancestor, which was an ape, is estimated to have lived between 5 and 13 million years ago, with many estimates around 6-8 million years ago. Important fossil finds like *Sahelanthropus tchadensis* and *Orrorin tugenensis* represent early hominins near the time of this divergence, offering clues about this distant relative.

Both humans and chimpanzees represent successful and distinct outcomes of millions of years of evolution from that shared ancestor. Just as you and your cousin share grandparents but neither of you evolved from the other, humans and chimpanzees diverged from a common ancestral population. This means that while we are indeed closely related to chimpanzees, they are our evolutionary cousins, not our direct predecessors. Their lineage continued to evolve and adapt to its own environment, just as ours did, resulting in the distinct species we observe today.
