This widespread belief, which has permeated popular culture and dietary advice for generations, actually stems from a remarkably simple yet impactful error in scientific analysis. The myth's origin traces back to an 1870 German study by Dr. E. von Wolff. In his analysis of spinach, a misplaced decimal point in the reported iron content led to an overestimation by a factor of ten. Instead of the modest amount of iron spinach truly contains, the error suggested it was packed with an extraordinary quantity, making it seem like a nutritional powerhouse for iron.

It wasn't until the 1930s that this significant error was reportedly corrected by other researchers, though some sources suggest the correction came even later, in the 1937. Despite the rectification, the initial exaggerated findings had already taken root in the public consciousness. While spinach certainly does contain iron, it's not in the extraordinary amounts once believed due to the scientific oversight. For instance, while it provides some iron, many other foods, such as lentils, beans, and red meat, offer comparable or higher concentrations without the historical misconception.

The enduring nature of this myth can largely be attributed to its enthusiastic adoption in popular culture, most notably through the beloved cartoon character Popeye the Sailor. Popeye famously gained incredible strength after consuming a can of spinach, directly linking the leafy green to prodigious power and, by extension, its supposed high iron content. This powerful cultural reinforcement, combined with the initial scientific misreport, solidified spinach's image as an iron-rich miracle food in the minds of millions, making the myth remarkably resilient even after the scientific community acknowledged the original error.
