What unit of measurement is used to measure the intensity of earthquakes?

The Richter scale was developed by Charles Richter in 1935. Each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude and about 31.6 times more energy released. Scientists now more commonly use the Moment Magnitude Scale, but Richter remains the most well-known term.
