On a deceptively warm January afternoon in 1919, Boston's North End experienced an event that defied belief: a towering wave of thick, brown molasses surged through its streets. This wasn't a natural disaster, but the catastrophic failure of an enormous storage tank belonging to the Purity Distilling Company. The tank (Review), roughly 50 feet high and 90 feet in diameter, held an astounding 2.3 million gallons of molasses, destined for conversion into industrial alcohol used in munitions during World War I and later for alcoholic beverages as Prohibition loomed. The demand for industrial alcohol had led to the hasty construction of this colossal tank in 1915, with reports suggesting it was poorly built, lacked proper inspections, and frequently groaned and leaked, yet these warnings were largely ignored.

The unique properties of molasses transformed this industrial accident into an especially deadly event. Molasses is significantly denser than water, giving the initial wave immense destructive power as it swept through the neighborhood, demolishing buildings and tossing vehicles. However, its non-Newtonian fluid characteristics meant that while it flowed rapidly at first, its viscosity increased dramatically as it cooled in the winter air, quickly becoming a thick, glue-like substance.

This shift from a fast-moving torrent to a sticky, viscous mass proved lethal, trapping victims who were knocked down and making rescue efforts incredibly difficult. Rescuers struggled to wade through the waist-deep syrup, and many caught in the wreckage slowly suffocated or drowned as the molasses hardened around them. The cleanup itself was a monumental task, taking weeks and requiring salt water from fireboats to dissolve the sticky residue, with the lingering smell of molasses reportedly detectable in the area for decades afterward. The disaster led to one of Massachusetts' first class-action lawsuits, ultimately holding the company responsible and contributing to stricter industrial safety regulations.
