Sunlight Takes Eight Minutes to Reach Earth

The vast expanse separating Earth from the Sun means that the light we see is not instantaneous. Traveling at a staggering 299,792 kilometers per second, light still requires a significant amount of time to journey across the approximately 150 million kilometers to our planet. This cosmic delay means that whenever we gaze at the Sun, we are witnessing it as it was more than eight minutes in the past. The light hitting your eyes at any given moment began its journey before you even started reading this sentence. This principle extends to everything we see in the universe; the farther away an object is, the further back in time (Review) we are looking.

For centuries, many believed the speed of light was infinite. It wasn't until the 17th century that our understanding began to shift. In 1676, Danish astronomer Ole Rรธmer was the first to provide proof that light travels at a finite speed through his observations of Jupiter's moons. He noticed that the timing of their eclipses appeared to change depending on Earth's distance from Jupiter, correctly reasoning that the light took longer to reach us when the planets were farther apart. Later, more precise terrestrial measurements were made by scientists like Albert Michelson in the 1920s, solidifying our modern value for the speed of light.

This travel time has some fascinating implications. If the Sun were to suddenly vanish from existence, we would remain blissfully unaware for over eight minutes. Earth would continue to orbit the empty space and be bathed in sunlight as if nothing had happened. This is because, according to Einstein's theory of relativity, the force of gravity also travels at the speed of light. So, for those crucial eight minutes, both the light and the gravitational pull of the Sun would still be on their way to us, creating a brief, posthumous continuation of our normal existence before darkness and a journey into interstellar (Review) space would begin.
