The ocean sunfish, or Mola mola, employs an extraordinary reproductive strategy to ensure the continuation of its species, releasing an immense quantity of eggs into the open ocean. Ultimately, an ocean sunfish grows from a nearly invisible egg to an adult that can weigh over 5,000 pounds, representing one of the most extreme size increases in the animal kingdom—up to 60 million times their birth size. This incredible reproductive output is a direct adaptation to the high mortality rates faced by their eggs and larvae, a biological gamble that has allowed these unique giants to persist across the world's temperate and tropical oceans.
