Africa is a continent uniquely defined by its surrounding waters. To its west lies the vast Atlantic Ocean, while the Indian Ocean borders its eastern shores. To the north, the Mediterranean Sea separates it from Europe, and the Red Sea lies to its northeast, acting as a crucial maritime passage. These extensive bodies of water highlight Africa's continental rather than lacustrine nature.

The continent also features a distinctive geographical projection known as the Horn of Africa. This large peninsula juts into the Arabian Sea in the continent's northeastern part, resembling an animal's horn. This strategically important region is home to countries like Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia, and has historically played a vital role in global trade routes.

Furthermore, Africa is dotted with numerous capes, most famously the Cape of Good Hope. This rocky headland on South Africa's Atlantic coast was a monumental landmark for early European explorers, signifying the opening of a sea route from Europe to Asia. Although initially dubbed the "Cape of Storms" due to its challenging weather, its eventual name symbolized the hope of reaching the East by sea. It is important to note that while iconic, the true southernmost tip of the African continent is actually Cape Agulhas, located further southeast.
