Zero Was Invented Twice
The idea of "nothing" as a number was such a profound leap that it happened more than once in human history. Early versions of zero, developed by the Babylonians and the Mayans, served as placeholders. In Babylon's base-60 system, a pair of slanted (Review) wedges would signify an empty column, making it possible to distinguish between numbers like 204 and 24. For the Mayans, a shell-like glyph fulfilled a similar role in their complex calendars. While revolutionary, these early zeroes were markers of absence, not numbers you could add, subtract, or multiply.
The true breakthrough occurred in India around the 5th century. Mathematicians there, and later Brahmagupta in the 7th century, were the first to treat zero as a number in its own right. They established the fundamental rules of arithmetic involving zero, defining what happens when you add, subtract, or multiply by it. This conceptual shift transformed zero from a simple separator into a powerful mathematical tool, forming the foundation (Review) of the decimal system we use today.
This Indian innovation is the direct ancestor of our modern zero. The concept, along with the entire decimal numeral system, spread from India to the Middle (Review) East. Arab mathematicians like Al-Khwarizmi embraced and refined the system, eventually introducing it to Europe in the 12th century. While other cultures glimpsed the need for zero, it was the Indian version's robust mathematical properties that allowed it to become a cornerstone of science, engineering, and daily life across the globe.
