The circular, coral-reef island is an atoll, a fascinating geological feature found in warm tropical oceans. Its formation was famously theorized by Charles Darwin, who suggested that an atoll begins as a coral reef fringing a volcanic island. Over millions of years, the volcano sinks and erodes, leaving behind the ring of coral that continues to grow, enclosing a central lagoon.
