This soft, velvety material owes its name to a simple French geographical observation. In the 19th century, France began importing exceptionally soft, un-split kidskin gloves from Sweden. These popular and luxurious items became known as "gants de Suรจde," which literally translates to "gloves of Sweden." The association between the country and this specific style of leather was so strong that the French name for the country, Suรจde, soon became the go-to term for the material itself.

Unlike traditional leather which uses the tough outer grain of an animal hide, this material is created from the softer, more fibrous underside. This inner layer is then sanded or buffed to raise the fine fibers, creating its signature napped texture. When the term crossed into the English language, the full phrase was shortened. Instead of referring to "gloves of Sweden," people began using just the place name to describe the unique finish. So, every time you wear this material, you are wearing something named in honor of Sweden.
