What colorful natural light display can be seen near the North Pole?

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, occurs when charged particles from the Sun collide (Review) with gases in Earth's atmosphere. The different colors are produced by different gases: green and red from oxygen, and blue and purple from nitrogen.
