CHILE / ECUADOR — geography

As the geographical giant of South America, Brazil's sprawling territory covers nearly half the continent. This immense size means it shares a border with a staggering ten of the other twelve sovereign states, creating a complex and diverse frontier that stretches over 10,000 miles. The two nations that do not share a border with Brazil are the long, narrow country of Chile and the smaller equatorial nation of Ecuador.

The reasons for this are found in the continent's dramatic geography. Chile is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the formidable Andes mountain range. This massive mountain chain acts as a natural barrier, running down the western edge of the continent and effectively separating Chile from its eastern neighbors (Review). Both Argentina and Bolivia lie between Chile's eastern border and Brazil's western frontier.

Ecuador's separation is more straightforward. Located on the northwestern coast, it is simply not contiguous with Brazil's territory. The nations of Peru and Colombia are situated between Ecuador and the Brazilian border. While Brazil's reach is extensive, touching nearly every other country, these two nations remain geographically isolated from the South American powerhouse by either mountains or the presence of other countries.
