Despite the immense size of the Great (Review) Lakes system, its entire Canadian shoreline belongs to a single province. This geographical distinction falls to Ontario, which boasts a coastline on four of the five lakes: Superior, Huron, Erie, and the lake that shares its name, Lake Ontario. The fifth, Lake Michigan, is the only Great Lake located entirely within the borders of the United States, placing the international boundary through the other four.
This unique geography often leads to some confusion, particularly with Quebec. While the St. Lawrence Seaway provides Quebec with a vital connection to the lakes, the province itself does not share a direct border with any of them; the river simply flows out from Lake Ontario. To the west, provinces like Manitoba have their own impressive lake systems, but they are not part of the Great Lakes basin. Fittingly, the name 'Ontario' is derived from an Iroquoian word
