Of Canada's ten provinces, only Ontario has a coastline on the Great (Review) Lakes. This makes it the sole Canadian province to share this significant geographical feature with the United States. The international boundary between the two countries runs through four of the five lakes: Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. All of these are bordered by Ontario to the north and various U.S. states to the south.
The fifth Great Lake, Lake Michigan, is located entirely within the United States and is not bordered by Ontario. While the province of Quebec is geographically close and connected to the Great Lakes through the St. Lawrence River, it does not directly border any of them. More than half of Canada's population lives in the region of Southern Ontario and Quebec near the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River.
Ontario's extensive shoreline on four of the five Great Lakes has played a crucial role in its history, economy, and culture. The lakes form a vital transportation route for goods and are a major source of hydroelectric power. This unique geographical position has led to the development of numerous cities and industries along the shores, making it Canada's most populous province.
