This fascinating bit of geographical trivia holds true thanks to the names of New York's and New Jersey's respective state capitals. When all 50 U.S. state capitals are arranged alphabetically, Albany is first. While a few other capitals start with the letter "A," such as Annapolis and Augusta, none come before the historic city on the Hudson River. At the opposite end of the list is Trenton, the final entry. This alphabetical bookending is made more interesting by the fact that New York and New Jersey share a border, making their capitals the alpha and omega of the list.

Both cities also hold significant places in early American history. Albany is one of the oldest surviving European settlements from the original thirteen colonies, chosen as New York's capital due to its central location, a common practice to avoid concentrating power in a state's largest city. Just over 150 miles to the south, Trenton is famously known as the site of George Washington's pivotal victory after crossing the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War. For a brief period in 1784, Trenton even served as the capital of the entire United States, cementing its importance in the nation's formative years.
