In January 2026, the European Union concluded a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India, marking a significant milestone in global trade relations. This ambitious deal, which followed nearly two decades of negotiations, aims to strengthen economic and political ties between the world's second and fourth largest economies. The agreement creates an expansive free trade zone encompassing two billion people, a quarter of global GDP, and a third of global trade, making it one of the largest trade agreements ever negotiated.
The agreement is designed to liberalize trade and investment by significantly reducing or eliminating tariffs on a vast array of goods. For instance, Indian tariffs on European wines are set to be cut from 150% to 75% initially, eventually reaching as low as 20%, while tariffs on olive oil will be eliminated over five years. Beyond goods, the deal grants EU companies privileged access to India's services market, including key sectors such as financial services and maritime transport. This comprehensive pact is projected to double EU goods exports to India by 2032, saving approximately €4 billion annually in duties on European products.
Beyond the economic benefits, the EU-India FTA also incorporates dedicated chapters on trade and sustainable development. These commitments address crucial areas like environmental protection, climate change, and workers' rights, and support women's economic empowerment. The agreement also ensures a high level of protection and enforcement for Intellectual Property rights. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen aptly described it as the "mother of all deals," highlighting its strategic importance for both partners amidst evolving geopolitical landscapes and global economic challenges.
