In late March 2026, China plans to launch what new cargo spacecraft to its Tiangong space station?

China is preparing to enhance its logistics capabilities for the Tiangong space station with the introduction of a new cargo spacecraft. This upcoming vessel, named Qingzhou, which translates to "Light Ship," is designed to serve as a nimble and cost-effective complement to the existing Tianzhou cargo freighters. Developed by the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAMCAS), Qingzhou is expected to make its inaugural flight in 2026, marking a significant step in China's evolving space transportation system.

The Qingzhou spacecraft features a streamlined single-capsule structure, capable of transporting up to 2 tons of supplies within its 27-cubic-meter cargo hold. It is engineered to carry essential living supplies for taikonauts, experimental gear, and scientific instruments. A notable feature is its dedicated 300-liter cold-chain storage section, ensuring the delivery of fresh produce to astronauts in orbit. The design also incorporates intelligent logistics systems to simplify cargo transfer and management for the crew, emphasizing a taikonaut-centered approach.

This next-generation cargo craft is a result of extensive study of international and domestic cargo spacecraft, aiming for a design that is low-cost, highly reliable, flexible, and intelligent. By introducing Qingzhou, China aims to meet the growing operational needs of its permanently crewed Tiangong space station, which has been occupied since 2022. Beyond supporting Tiangong, Qingzhou is also positioned to offer commercial freight services in the future, contributing to both economic and social value in the burgeoning commercial space sector.
