SURINAME — geography

On the northeastern coast of South America lies a unique nation that holds the distinction of being the continent's smallest independent country in terms of both land area and population. Covering roughly 163,820 square kilometers, this nation is a true outlier in a continent known for its vast countries. With a population of just over 600,000 people, it is also the least populated sovereign state in South America.

Formerly known as Dutch Guiana, the country gained its independence from the Netherlands in 1975. This history is reflected in its official language, which is Dutch, making it the only territory outside of Europe where Dutch is spoken by a majority of the population. The cultural landscape is incredibly diverse, with a mix of descendants from African slaves, as well as indentured laborers from Asia. This rich heritage contributes to a vibrant and cosmopolitan society.

A significant portion of the country, over 90%, is covered by lush rainforest, giving it the highest proportion of forest cover in the world. This vast expanse of tropical rainforest is part of the larger Amazon biome and is teeming with a wide variety of flora and fauna, making it one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. The majority of the population resides along the narrow coastal plain, leaving the interior largely untouched and sparsely inhabited. The capital and largest city, Paramaribo, is home to about half of the nation's residents.
