KHARTOUM, SUDAN — geography

The two great tributaries of the Nile River join forces in Sudan's capital city, Khartoum. The meeting point, known locally as "al-Mogran" (the Confluence), is a remarkable sight. The waters of the two rivers have visibly different colors and flow side-by-side for a considerable distance before they finally mix into the single, mighty river that continues its journey north to Egypt.

The two rivers begin thousands of kilometers apart and have very different characteristics. The White Nile, the longer of the two, originates in the Great (Review) Lakes region of central Africa and carries light-colored clay sediment, giving it a murky, pale appearance. The Blue Nile, which starts at Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands, is darker and carries a massive amount of fertile black silt, especially during its summer flood season.

Historically, the Blue Nile's contribution has been the most significant, providing over 80% of the Nile's water and the rich sediment that made ancient Egyptian agriculture possible. The strategic location at the union of these two vital waterways is precisely why Khartoum was established there, growing into the major political and economic hub it is today.
