The second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was born at Clarence House on August 15, 1950. As the monarch's eldest daughter, she was granted the title of Princess Royal in 1987, a distinction she holds for life. Due to the rules of male-preference primogeniture that were in place at the time of her birth, her two younger brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, were placed ahead of her in the line of succession.

Beyond her royal status, the princess is a highly accomplished equestrian. She began competing in her youth and went on to win a gold medal at the 1971 European Eventing Championships. Her passion and skill culminated in her competing with the British equestrian team at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, making her the first member of the British royal family to ever compete in the Olympics. Her daughter, Zara Tindall, would later follow in her footsteps, winning an Olympic silver medal in 2012.

Known for her no-nonsense attitude and a formidable work ethic, she is consistently one of the busiest working royals, undertaking hundreds of engagements each year for numerous charities and organizations. Her famous stoicism was on full display during a harrowing kidnapping attempt in 1974. When the armed assailant ordered her to get out of her car, she reportedly replied with a blunt, "Not bloody likely!"
