The 1939 epic was a titan at the 12th Academy Awards, setting a record with eight competitive Oscar wins. However, despite its near-total sweep of the major categories, the film missed out on the award for Best Actor. Clark Gable's iconic performance as Rhett Butler was considered a strong contender, but the honor instead went to Robert Donat for his heartfelt performance as a beloved schoolmaster in "Goodbye, Mr. Chips."

The film certainly didn't go home empty-handed in the other major categories. Vivien Leigh secured the Best Actress award for her unforgettable portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara, while Victor Fleming won for Best Director, capping an incredible year where he also directed "The Wizard of Oz." Of course, the movie also took home the coveted Best Picture award, becoming the first color film to achieve that milestone.

Among its other historic victories was a Best Supporting Actress win for Hattie McDaniel, the first-ever Oscar awarded to an African American performer. While Gable's loss may seem surprising today, 1939 is often considered one of Hollywood's greatest years, with stiff competition from classics like "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Stagecoach," making every single win a hard-fought battle.
