The bickering, adventurous couple of Jack T. Colton and Joan Wilder were first introduced to audiences in the 1984 blockbuster hit, Romancing the Stone. The film starred Michael Douglas as the rugged American adventurer and Kathleen Turner as the timid romance novelist who gets swept into a real-life treasure hunt in the Colombian jungle. Their on-screen chemistry and the movie's perfect blend of action, comedy, and romance made it a massive, unexpected success.
Capitalizing on the film's popularity, 20th Century Fox quickly put a sequel into production. Released just a year later, The Jewel of the Nile picked up with Jack and Joan finding their "happily ever after" sailing the world a bit dull. Their relationship is tested when Joan accepts an invitation from a charming Arab ruler, pulling them both into a new, dangerous adventure across North Africa.
Both films also featured the hilarious Danny DeVito as the small-time crook, Ralph, who relentlessly pursues the duo in his own comical attempts to get rich. While the sequel was also a financial success, it's the original that is often hailed as a classic of the 1980s, largely thanks to the magnetic pairing of Douglas and Turner.
