The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission is on an ambitious journey to orbit Mercury, the innermost planet of our solar system, with arrival anticipated in November 2026. This complex mission, a collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), launched in October 2018. Reaching Mercury is incredibly challenging due to the Sun's immense gravitational pull, which requires the spacecraft to perform numerous gravity assist maneuvers to shed speed and align its trajectory. These include one flyby of Earth, two of Venus, and six close approaches to Mercury itself before its final orbital insertion.
The mission comprises two scientific orbiters that are traveling together: ESA's Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and JAXA's Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MIO, also known as MMO). Once in orbit, these two spacecraft will separate to conduct a comprehensive study of Mercury from different vantage points. The MPO will focus on mapping the planet's surface, investigating its internal structure, composition, and geology, while MIO will delve into Mercury's magnetic field and its interactions with the solar wind.
Studying Mercury offers a unique opportunity to understand the formation and evolution of rocky planets, including Earth, in our solar system. Despite its proximity, Mercury remains one of the least explored planets, with only two previous missions, NASA's Mariner 10 and MESSENGER, having visited it. BepiColombo's detailed observations aim to unravel mysteries such as the planet's surprisingly strong magnetic field, the presence of ice in its polar craters, and its unusual surface features, providing invaluable data for planetary science and even testing aspects of Einstein's theory of general relativity.
