The Danish aristocrat Karen Blixen, writing under the male pseudonym Isak Dinesen, based this famous work on the 17 years she spent managing a coffee plantation in what was then British East Africa (modern-day Kenya). The book, published in 1937, is not a linear autobiography but rather a lyrical and poignant memoir. It captures her deep affection for the continent, its landscape, and its people, as well as her complex relationships, most notably with the English big-game hunter Denys Finch Hatton.

In 1985, Dinesen's memoir was adapted into a sweeping, critically acclaimed film directed by Sydney Pollack. Starring Meryl Streep as Blixen and Robert Redford as Finch Hatton, the movie was celebrated for its stunning cinematography and romantic scope. It became a major cultural phenomenon, introducing a new generation to Dinesen's life and writing. The film was a tremendous success at the Academy Awards, winning seven Oscars, including the prestigious award for Best Picture.
