While it feels like a timeless tradition, the New York City Marathon is a relatively modern invention, first taking place in 1970. The inaugural race was a world away from the massive spectacle we know today. Instead of spanning all five boroughs, the entire course consisted of just over four laps around the outer loop of Central Park. The event was organized by the New York Road Runners, led by Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta.

That first marathon was a remarkably small and local affair. The entry fee was only one dollar, and just 127 runners started the race, with only 55 crossing the finish line. The winner, Gary Muhrcke, was a local firefighter. It wasn't until 1976 that the course was redesigned to run through all five boroughs, transforming the race into a global phenomenon that now attracts over 50,000 participants and millions of spectators, perfectly capturing the spirit of the running boom that began in that decade.
