NORTH CAROLINA note: mt. washington, new hampshire is 6300 ft. — geography

Nestled in the Black Mountain range of western North Carolina, Mount Mitchell rises to an elevation of 6,684 feet, making it the highest peak in the United States east of the Mississippi River. This distinction often leads to confusion with other prominent eastern mountains, particularly Mount Washington in New Hampshire, which stands as the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet. While both are significant peaks within the Appalachian Mountains, Mount Mitchell claims the title of the highest point in the entire eastern half of the country by a margin of nearly 400 feet.

Mount Mitchell is more than just a statistic; it is the centerpiece of Mount Mitchell State Park, one of North Carolina's first state parks. The mountain is named after Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina, who first calculated its height in 1835. Tragically, he fell to his death on the mountain in 1857 while attempting to verify his own measurements. Today, a stone observation tower at the summit offers 360-degree views and on a clear day, visitors can see up to 85 miles.

The environment atop Mount Mitchell is also unique, resembling that of southern Canada more than the American Southeast. The cool, damp climate supports a rare Fraser fir and red spruce forest, a remnant of the last ice age. This fragile ecosystem, along with the mountain's impressive elevation, contributes to its significance as a landmark of the eastern United States. The accessibility of the summit, reachable by a short, paved trail from a parking lot near the peak, allows many visitors to experience this remarkable high-altitude environment.
