It makes sense that the nation's largest state would also be home to its largest national park. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska is a place of staggering scale. At over 13.2 million acres, it is a vast wilderness that defies easy comparison. To put its size into perspective, this single park is larger than the entire country of Switzerland and could comfortably contain Yellowstone (Review), Yosemite, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined with room to spare.
This immense landscape is often called the "mountain kingdom of North America," and for good reason. It’s where four major mountain ranges converge, creating a landscape of unparalleled vertical relief that includes nine of the 16 highest peaks in the United States. The park is also a land of ice, home to some of the largest and most active glaciers in the world outside of the polar ice caps, such as the Malaspina Glacier, which is larger than the state of Rhode Island.
