These two titans of Spanish cinema represent different generations of filmmaking. Pedro Almodóvar is the celebrated director behind the 1988 hit *Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown*. Rising to fame during the "La Movida Madrileña" cultural renaissance after the end of Franco's regime, Almodóvar is known for his distinct visual style. His films are famous for their vibrant color palettes, melodramatic plots, and their focus on complex, passionate female characters navigating desire, identity, and family.
The director of the other two films, *Belle de Jour* and *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie*, is Luis Buñuel, a pioneer of surrealist cinema. Working decades before Almodóvar, Buñuel began his career collaborating with artist Salvador Dalí on the famously shocking short *Un Chien Andalou*. Throughout his career, Buñuel used dream logic and absurd situations to create scathing critiques of the Catholic Church, European high society, and bourgeois morality. While their styles are vastly different, both men are considered two of the most influential and provocative directors in film history.
