In 1936, the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow commissioned composer Sergei Prokofiev to create a musical symphony for children. The result was this beloved "symphonic fairy tale," which tells the story of a young boy who disobeys his grandfather by venturing into a meadow. There, he encounters several animal friends (Review) before a fearsome wolf appears from the forest. The piece is designed to be narrated alongside the music, guiding the audience through Peter's clever and brave efforts to outsmart the wolf with the help of a little bird.
The work is a masterful introduction to the instruments of the orchestra, as Prokofiev assigned a specific instrument and musical theme to each character. This technique, known as a leitmotif, helps children learn to identify the unique sounds of the orchestra. The bird is represented by the high, fluttering flute; the duck by the reedy oboe; and the sly cat by the smooth clarinet. Peterโs own theme is carried by the string section, his grumpy grandfather is the bassoon, and the menacing wolf is announced by three French horns. The hunters who appear at the end are represented by the booming timpani drums.
