While it might seem an unusual category, the creation of these two iconic domes can be seen as a championship bout between two titans of design. In London, the magnificent St. Paul's Cathedral is the masterwork of Sir Christopher Wren. Following the devastating Great Fire of 1666 which destroyed the old cathedral, Wren was tasked with rebuilding not just this church, but dozens of others across the city. His design for St. Paul's, with its soaring dome, became the defining feature of the London skyline for centuries and a triumph of the English Baroque style.

Across Europe in Vatican City, the dome of St. Peter's Basilica is the vision of a true Renaissance master, Michelangelo. He took over the role of chief architect in his seventies, radically altering previous plans to create his powerful and elegant design. Though the dome was not fully completed until after his death, his model was largely followed, creating one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Interestingly, Wren himself studied Michelangelo's work on St. Peter's when conceiving his own plans, making the two famous domes forever linked in architectural history.
