The beloved building toy brand that originated in Billund, Denmark, in 1932 is LEGO. The company was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter who initially ran a woodworking shop. Facing the economic hardships of the Great (Review) Depression, Christiansen began to focus on producing wooden toys, which proved to be a more resilient business. It was two years later, in 1934, that he officially named his company "LEGO," a contraction of the Danish phrase "leg godt," meaning "play well". Interestingly, the word "lego" also means "I put together" in Latin, a fitting coincidence for a company that would become synonymous with construction.
Initially, LEGO's offerings included a variety of wooden toys, such as miniature vehicles and animals, reflecting Christiansen's carpentry background. A significant shift occurred in the late 1940s when plastic injection molding technology became available in Denmark. Inspired by interlocking plastic bricks created by British toymaker Hilary Fisher Page, LEGO began producing its own version, initially called "Automatic Binding Bricks," in 1949. However, it wasn't until 1958 that Christiansen's son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, patented the iconic stud-and-tube coupling system that gives LEGO bricks their superior interlocking capability and versatility, a design that remains largely unchanged today.
This innovative interlocking system laid the foundation (Review) for the "System of Play" concept, where all LEGO elements, regardless of their specific set, could fit together, fostering limitless creativity and construction possibilities. This commitment to compatibility and quality helped LEGO grow from a small workshop into a global phenomenon, inspiring generations of builders and becoming one of the most recognized and successful toy brands in history.
